As the space marines are being picked off one by one, Rowan (the only person in the year 2455 who’s had any experience with Jason Voorhees) calls for them to be pulled out of harms way. Professor Lowe retorts, “They know what they’re doing?” While this might seem callous, as “red shirts” they really do know what they’re doing, namely, how to die pointlessly.
This film is a Sartrean take on Jason. In it, Jason has the ability to jump into other people’s body. Thinking of Sartre famously line: “Hell is other people,” we understand the title, Jason Goes to Hell.
(plus, spoiler alert, at the end jason dies and goes to hell. what? you expected him to go to heaven?)
This movie is false advertising. It should be called Jason Takes a Boat because the first hour and 10 minutes is on a boat. Even when he gets to “New York” he is mostly in the docks, back alleys, and in the sewer. He only walks through Times Square for maybe 30 seconds. He never once looks around to take in the scenery.
It’s common sense that reanimating a dead Jason Voorhees should be avoided. Even more so when the neighbors are planning a surprise birftday day party. Unfortunately, there are too many mouth-breathers out there that just don’t get it. Although, now that I think about it, bringing Jason back does thin the herd. Hmm. Maybe resurrecting Jason isn’t so bad after all.
If you’re going to be a camp counselor in Crystal Lake, NJ (or Forest Green, or whatever name they’re calling it this film), be sure to bring your machete-proof vest and your Visa card, because Jason will cut/chop/slash you and he doesn’t take American Express.
